They were nightmares inside of nightmares. Sounds of memories that had no images, left suffering in the darkness as he couldn't see what his mind remembered. He knew what they were, bits and pieces of his past life that had somehow been wiped from his mind. They came to him in his sleep, just bits and pieces of sounds from a life he'd never remember. He'd always awake feeling like he'd left something behind, as though he would never be whole again. His bed already drenched in sweat, he decided he'd had enough of strange voices and memories he couldn't remember and headed out to the recreation center. This time of the morning, the only ones awake were the caretakers and most of them were so used to seeing him out and about, they didn't even give him a second glance.

For the most part, Rhys's world was dark. Especially if everything was running at a lower temperature. Lucky for him, the walls in the Lab were littered with wires which lit up the surface like a kaleidoscope of warm color. It enabled him to walk from his room and down dorms hallway to the rec center without hitting a single thing.

The rec center, as usual, was empty and as he moved further into the room, the automatic lights that detected movement flickered to life. He avoided the exercise machines and the sparring equipment and made for the mat in the far corner. Ever since he's lost his sight, he found that he'd become less able to sense those around him. Most people showed up in his heat vision just fine, as they ran a normal human body temperature but some people, even his own twin, ran many degrees cooler and they appeared as invisible in his eyes. One caretaker took pity on him and created sparring dummies for him that would allow him to sense presence instead of seeing them and to take action if he needed to. The dummies were equipped with small electrodes that would shoot into the air around them and his heightened senses would easily be able to pinpoint them, even if they moved. They were positioned on a moving floor and they never moved in the same pattern to keep him from learning their movements.

He pulled his white shirt up and over his head, the dog tag on his collar with his ID on it clinking as he did so, and tossed it aside. In the Alpha ward, everyone was dressed the same; white tee shirt and tan pants. Everyone was offered a pair of shoes but hardly anyone wore them. Rhys positioned himself in the center of the moving turn table of dummies and used his foot to switch it on. The machine hummed to life, lighting up the floor as power flooded through the wires and machines but the dummies, designed to stay at a cooler temperature he couldn't see, remained invisible. Even the underlying wires that led to them were kept cool and invisible.

He took a deep breath and got in his ready stance, finally able to chase out the memories of his nightmares and clear his thoughts. He didn't need to be worrying about things he didn't understand. However he and his twin had gotten here, it had probably been for the best. He felt the tingle of electrodes and he turned, cracking a dummy down with a single kick.

I was choking in the crowd, building my rain up in the clouds, falling like ashes to the ground, hoping my feelings they would drown, but they never did, ever lived, ebbing and flowing, inhibited, limited till it broke open and it rained down like pain
You made me a believer
